Tindharia – Siliguri Toy Train Re-starts by the end of December 2013

The Darjeeling Toy Train is also known as Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), which runs on a narrow gauge starting from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling “The Land of Tea & spices”.

It is a track of 80Km which was built between 1879 and 1881 and also covers a place called Ghum ‘The highest railway station in India’. This train route offers numerous beautiful sights of valleys, tea gardens, and small forests etc.

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was also declared as the World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the year 1999 – The only second train to be declared as the heritage site followed by the Semmering Railway of Australia.

The route between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling covers 13 railway junctions and more than 500 bridges.

Darjeeling Toy Train Journeys

The toy train service between Siliguri to Kurseong (Tindharia) was paused in June 2010 due to a landslide, but the Indian Railway & the DHR have decided to resume its service by the end of December 2013. It will be the best Christmas gift from the Indian Railway to the national & international tourists.

It is said that R.s. 85 Crore INR was invested 9 months back to re-establish this toy train.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway operates 3 tourist train services which includes

Daily Train Services – Normal route between New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling.

Joy Ride Tour  Siliguri This takes you on short trip from Darjeeling to Ghum & return return, and Siliguri Junction to Sukna & return.

Jungle Safari Holiday Trains – which takes you from Siliguri to Tindharia & return, with the views of the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary and “Z” reverses where the train goes zigzag & forward and backward up the slopes.

The senior railway official has also said in an interview that We have plans to resume the service to Gayabari with much fanfare. A special train will play from Siliguri Junction till Gayabari (34 km) on that day. The date will probably be December 26 and The work of relaying tracks at Tindharia has more or less been completed. We have a plan to conduct a trial run on the newly laid tracks this week.
